It's done

With the split done and ready to be unleashed, here is the story of the two bands on it.

Cella Cum Sanus.

Cela Cum Sanus is a lark, a moment of whimsy. The two members (Luke Bergen and myself) are often coming up with strange project ideas that never see the light of day. This one actually did. The original idea was to just do a fun EP of noise-y noise stuff and improvise the whole thing. What we ended up doing was making a noise-y little pop record. Apparently, we can't really get away from melody. The guitar and drums were done live off the floor with no pre-planning. We just threw mics up and hit record. Then, about a week later, I sat down with a bass guitar and having not listened to it since we recorded it, improvised bass parts and kept every first take. No fixing, no overdubing (minus one little backwards part that was done in post-production). This EP is what we played that afternoon, warts and all. I hope you like it.

Hal Johnson & the Joanne McLeods.

Many years ago I was in a punk band called Thee Armada. At one point, all of us developed an interest in grindcore. Not really a serious interest (except for me I actually like it) but everyone found is funny. The other other members at the time started a grindcore band with no name and no real songs, just a few funny titles and a bunch of noise. They did one show like that on whim in the town of Grunthal when one of the other bands on the bill had dropped out last second. Then, I joined as vocalist. We played a handful of shows under different names each time, and by our last show we were Hal Johnson & the Joanne McLeods and was now vocals and electric piano (played through a distorted guitar amp). We played one big show then never found the time to do anything like that again. This was in 2003.

Fast forward to 2010, I still have an interest in grindcore and the related genre of powerviolence and I felt like doing something in that style. When it came time to name the project (which is really just me on all instruments, but do I really want to call it Paul Hodgert?) I decided to throw back to the old group that played maybe 4 shows ever? Thus, Hal Johnson & the Joanne McLeods. These ten songs were written and recorded over about 3 hours and I hope it shows.

Check back tomorrow for a link to download the whole thing for free.

Holding Hands

Well, an interesting and vague update here. I (Paul) am now involved in a new project with a good friend. WE're gonna do a record and at least one show, maybe more? It's a bit of a departure from what I've been doing lately, but it harkens back to my youth and I am totally stoked on it. Once I have anything to show (logo, a tune, whatever) I'll try to throw it up here for anyone to check out. We're still at work trying to get something going on a Royal Society single, but life has gotten in the way once more. Hopefully in the new year?

Until Then...

STOP GAP!

Hey everyone.

Paul here. It's been a while since anything happened here, but that's mostly because everyone has been extremely busy over the last few months. I've been busy working, writing and doing school work. Luke has been busy working, moving and touring with Boats. They are currently on the east coast leg of their fall tour. Check out http://www.yeahboats.com/ for details.

As for the band itself, we've had to put the single on hold for a few months, but plan to finish everything off over Christmas then get to work on a proper record in the spring.

Until then, I hope we can post some stuff in the coming weeks like might be cool or fun to read and maybe even some music? Who knows.

Yes, this still exists.

As I said above, yes, this still exists. Sorry for the lack of updates. Everyone has either been busy with the school year ending, or on a US tour with Boats! Now that things are settling down, we plan to update this more often. Later this week I plan to do an exciting entry about the records I listened to while studying for exams. It will be more interesting than it sounds.

Today I went behind the boards and demoed a new song, which we'll hopefully be able to get through as a group before this weekend. The We've Got It Going On single should be done as soon as Luke has time to sing it, which won't be until next week because..

BOATS! CD RELEASE SHOW AND SPELLING BEE

I was watching Celebrity Golf with Sam Snead this morning at he was playing Vic Damone who many of you probably have heard of. Vic was wearing a pair of excellently tailored trousers. They hit him just above the shoe and were tapered nice and narrow in the leg. Despite my best efforts, I couldn't find a picture of that match but here is another picture, with Vic on the far left, with excellent looking slacks.

To do

With Luke getting back today from his golf weekend in Pheonix, this looks like a good time to go over what the band has to do so we can get this single done, and, you know, play some shows.

1. Finish single:
-track vocals for a-side
-mix a-side
-master a-side
-finish lyrics for b-side
-track vocals for b-side
-mix b-side
-master b-side
-take photo for cover art and design the rest of cover art

2. Finish writing and demoing new tunes
-finalize lyrics for 12-465
-write lyrics for new fast song
-arrange and write lyrics for songs Piano 1, Piano 2 and Piano 3
-figure out what to do with the two riffs Luke has kicking around.

3. Find a bass player.
-anyone know a bass player? They do not need their own gear, but it would probably be beneficial.

4. Learn all songs and a cover to play an actual set.

Wow, this is gonna take forever, at the pace we're going. We'll keep you all updated.
